It’s been a great day at This Way Up 15, closing out two days of exhibition innovation with an ‘in-conversation’ event, a host of practical workshops and lunchtime labs (cat videos anyone?), and three afternoon panels on event cinema, beautiful data and the value of the documentary. First up this morning, BFI CEO Amanda Nevill introduced ever-inspiring filmmaker Carol Morley, and also shared some fantastic thoughts on the value of getting exhibitors together, and how encouraging it is to see so many This Way Up 15 delegates doing so many exciting and innovative things with Lottery funding – well done all!

In conversation with the BFI’s Ben Roberts for the first of our morning sessions, Carol Morley stole our hearts with her insights into the sector, audiences, being a female filmmaker, and what she’d like to see more of.

Next up in Close That Window, we looked at the threat technology and digital distribution could be to cinemas. Will our audiences will soon be opting to stay at home in favour of watching new releases in their PJs? Or will the shared experience prevail? Meanwhile in Local Stories, we questioned whether independent filmmaking with a sense of place and local connection has an impact on cinema-going.

After being fed and watered, we kicked off our afternoon sessions with discussions on data – with more than ever before, how can we make use of it with integrity and pragmatism? – the ever-increasing Box Office value of the documentary, and whether film alone is enough in the age of live events and gimmicks.

To finish, the lovely people from Abandon Normal Devices festival presented – via robot(!) - the results of their two-day hack, investigating the anatomy of the archive, and our MC Gaylene Gould rounded up our closing remarks.
